Criminal defense attorney and former Florida Bar president Michelle Suskauer spoke with the New York Post about Tiger Woods’ recent DUI arrest in Florida and what potential penalties he could face.
Woods, who was involved in a rollover crash and later pleaded not guilty, faces up to one year in jail if convicted. However, Suskauer explained that incarceration is unlikely given the circumstances of the case.
“Do I think he’s going to be facing jail time? It’s probably unlikely because he’s Tiger Woods,” Suskauer said. “What is a reasonable sentence in this case, probably probation.”
Suskauer noted that the absence of injuries in the crash could work in Woods’ favor, though the fact that a crash occurred — along with his prior DUI-related incident — may still be considered by prosecutors.
She also explained that DUI convictions in Florida typically carry mandatory conditions.
A conviction would likely include probation, fines, DUI school, treatment recommendations, community service, and a license suspension, Suskauer said.
Suskauer added that the case will most likely be resolved through a plea rather than going to trial.
