Criminal defense attorney and former president of The Florida Bar, Michelle Suskauer, has been appointed Chair of the Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Commission, beginning a two-year term that started January 1, 2026.
Suskauer, who previously served as Vice-Chair, will oversee the Commission’s advisory work related to criminal justice policy and system coordination throughout Palm Beach County. The Commission focuses on improving transparency, collaboration, and effectiveness across all parts of the local criminal justice system.
Drawing on more than three decades of experience in Palm Beach County courts, Suskauer emphasized the importance of informed and balanced policy.
“Having spent my career working within every part of the criminal justice system, as a public defender, private practitioner, and statewide bar leader, I am deeply committed to ensuring that policy decisions are informed by both data and real-world experience,” she said. “I look forward to working collaboratively with law enforcement, prosecutors, defense counsel, judges, and community stakeholders to advance thoughtful approaches to public safety and justice.”
Suskauer is the Immediate Past President of The Florida Bar and was the first former public defender to serve in that role. She has practiced criminal law in state and federal courts since 1991 and is widely recognized for her leadership, advocacy, and public service. In addition to her legal practice, she is a nationally recognized legal analyst and frequently appears on major broadcast networks.
Her appointment as Chair reflects her longstanding commitment to strengthening the criminal justice system through integrity, collaboration, and practical solutions.
